BCF Board of Directors
An ideal BCF Board Member is:
- An engaged volunteer, leader, or philanthropist with a history of community building in the Bow Valley or in previous communities in which you have lived
- Familiar with some aspects of fund development, strategic planning, diversity and inclusion, human resources, charitable governance, and financial management.
- Able to attend up to eight board meetings a year, sit on one Committee, attend up to 8 committee meetings per year and be available for annual planning. The expected total time commitment averages about 10 hours per month.
BCF COMMITTEES
BCF Board committees, each chaired by a Board member, are a critical part of the Foundation. They have direct impact and work to support the Bow Valley.
Committee membership is a great way to gain experience with BCF. Many of our Board members started as Committee members.

And ideal Committee and future Board Member is:
- An energetic and informed community member with skills and interest in, or a willingness to learn about communications, strategic planning, human resources, project assessment, and a love of fundraising and relationship building for community causes.
- Offers a voice that reflects the diverse needs and demographics of the Bow Valley.
- Can attend monthly meetings and be available for annual planning (approximate time commitment: average of 3 to 5 hours a month).

Committee descriptions
These are hands-on working committees that offer an excellent way to get to know the work of BCF, and a great springboard for a Board position in the future.
Program: Members oversee BCF programs, including community grants, community assessments, capacity building for community organizations, sector, and community meetings. Committee Members are encouraged to have or be willing to learn about the following areas:
- Understand and assess diverse community needs and priorities
- Innovative ways that community foundations can address community priorities
- Evaluate and adjudicate grant requests within policy and strategy parameters
- Assess outcomes and impact, celebrate recipients
Finance, Audit, and Investment: Advises the Board on all matters relating to BCF’s financial planning and reporting, audit, tax and compliance, internal controls, treasury, investments, and risk management. Committee Members are encouraged to have experience in or be willing to learn about the following areas:
- Financial, audit and investment strategy, policy and oversight
- Management of restricted funds as per agreements
- Oversight of internal financial performance, Audit, and CRA and Societies Act requirement
Fund Development: Advises the Board on matters relating to BCF’s fundraising, gift acceptance and donor relationship building and stewardship. Provides oversight of communications and engagement activities. Committee Members are encouraged to have experience in or be willing to learn about the following areas:
- Fund Development and Communications strategies, policies, and oversight
- Fund Development and Communications Plans and products
- Identifying, recruiting, and celebrating donors
- Engaging Board in fund development
Governance: Advises the Board on matters relating to BCF’s governance, structure, by-laws, policies and processes. Provides oversight of Human Resource Policy, Procedure and Executive Director Recruitment and Performance Evaluation. Committee Members are encouraged to have experience in or be willing to learn about the following areas:
- BCF strategy, policies, and bylaws
- Executive Director job description, recruitment, contract, and evaluation
- Selection, orientation, management, and evaluation of Board of Directors
- Directors’ professional development and succession plan
- HR strategy, policy, and oversight
- Risk Management Plan
Impact Investment:
- Recently established to explore community impact investment opportunities
